20-Year-Old 1st Edition Original Pokemon Booster Pack Sold for $56,000

A two decades original English Base Set Booster Box was sold in the US last week for astonishing $56,000 reports Kotaku AU.

The 1999 Pokemon 1st Edition Limited Printing (English) Base Set Unopened Booster Box was sold via Huggins & Scott Auctions last week. The opening bid was $20,000 and after a short period, the bids went up to the sky with a winning bid of $56,000.

The box was a limited English first edition in pristine condition with 36 11-card boosters, with each pack featuring five common, three uncommon, two energy and one rare card, as reported by Huggins & Scott.

Gotta Catch ‘em All! When Charizard and Blastoise (among others) entered the public lexicon over 20 years ago, few knew what to make of these curious anime characters. What is certain is that the brainchild of Satoshi Tajiri has transformed the entertainment industry and garnered several million fans the world over. Pokémon is the highest-grossing media franchise of all-time with more than $59 billion in total revenue. It is understandable then that the offered 1999 Pokémon 1st Edition Limited Printing (English) Base Set unopened booster box will garner significant bidding interest and has boundless “crossover” appeal. Fans of the franchise and casual observers will immediately understand the importance of this sealed box. After two years of no reported sales, an October 2017 internet auction garnered a confirmed sale of $54,000.
