Trainers, a new Special Research called ‘Looming in the Shadows’ is live and there are six-stages of tasks that one must complete and eventually battle and defeat the Team Go Rocket Leader Giovanni.
The Looming in the Shadows Special Research is six-stage research and completing the given tasks will grant you cool rewards. The tasks are quite interesting and it will take longer than we expected to complete the Special Research.
NOTE: You have to complete the four-stage ‘A Troubling Situation’ Research to unlock the ‘Looming in the Shadows’ Special Research.
NOTE: Trainers can receive Giovanni Special Research once per calendar month. For example, if you complete your September Giovanni Special Research in mid-October, you’ll receive new Special Research shortly after. If you complete the September Research in mid-September, you’ll need to wait until midnight on October 1st (local time) to receive the Research again.Â

- Defeat 3 Team Go Rocket Grunts: 500 XP
- Catch 1 Shadow Pokemon: 500 XP

Looming in the Shadows Stage 2/6
- Spin a PokeStop 5 days in a row: 750 XP
- Purify 15 Shadow Pokemon: 750 XP
- Win 5 Raids: 750 XP
- Rewards: x1000 Stardust, x3 Revives and x3 Hyper Potion
Looming in the Shadows Stage 3/6
- Use 6 Supereffective Charged Attacks in Gym Battles: 1000 XP
- Win 3 Great League Trainer Battles against another Trainer: 1000 XP
- Defeat 6 Team Go Rocket Grunts: 1000 XP
- Rewards: x1,500 Stardust, x15 GreatBall and x5 Pinap Berry

- Battle Team Go Rocket Leader Arlo: 1250 XP
- Battle Team Go Rocket Leader Cliff: 1250 XP
- Battle Team Go Rocket Leader Sierra: 1250 XP
- Rewards: x2,000 Stardust, x1 Rocket Radar and x3 Golden Razz Berry

- Find the Team Go Rocket Boss Giovanni: x2,500 Stardust
- Battle the Team Go Rocket Boss: 1,500 XP
- Defeat the Team Go Rocket Boss: x3 SIlver Pinnap Berry
- Rewards: x3,000 Stardust, x1 Fast TM and 1 Charged TM

- Claim Reward: 2,000 XP
