Muted – When a Darker Version of the Pokemon world meets Black Mirror

Clément Martin aka “Lemo” and noOne Studio surprised us again with an unusual, but really cool video, this time titled Dark Edition S.W.A.T.

Now, to refresh your memory, Clement Martin (representing noOne studio) and a team of co-directors made the world-best Pokemon trailer – the Pokemon Dark Edition and got very positive feedback from the Pokemon community. We really wanted to see a full-length Dark Edition Pokemon movie, and maybe, just maybe, our wish will come true one day.

Now, let’s get back to their latest Dark Edition project. They released the video on October 31, 2020, and are already receiving positive comments from their fans. To be honest, they deserve it and you should see it for yourself. But first, I would like you to learn more about the Dark Edition S.W.A.T. project.

I had a chance to talk with Clément Martin aka “Lemo,” and Lise-Marie Amar, and find out more about Muted.

Clément Martin aka “Lemo,” has been working for 7 years in the industry, first as a rig artist and then as a CG supervisor and Director. He’s always been developing personal projects during his free time, the latest being Dark Edition.

Lise-Marie Amar is Head of production, who’s worked in London on 3D productions like Guardians of the galaxy 2, Paddington 2, and more. imdb/linkedin.

Hi again. We heard you guys did another awesome trailer, but this time much different than the Pokemon Dark Edition. We must say, congrats on breaking records with that video, you deserve it! Now, we’ve seen your new S.W.A.T Dark Edition trailer on your official Youtube channel, and once again, you nailed it! The community loves it, and many would like to hear the story behind it. That being said, what got you into making this type of video?

We love to make new original content with cool creatures designs and interesting storylines, that’s why, at noOne, we always try to make something unexpected. This video is a proof of concept for our show Muted (we started a kick-starter for it: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/noonestudio/muted-an-animated-series) In this series we want to show a world where our animals would be replaced by creatures and tackle important topics like animal condition in a world ruled by mankind.

What did the guys in the video do wrong so S.W.A.T had to enter their facility? What are their crimes?

This video tells the story of a “normal” S.W.A.T. intervention into drug dealers and gang members hideout, but this is in a world where people live with strange creatures instead of animals.

What is the first creature that is shown in the video? By the comments in the video, we can assume is Pokemon Aerodactyl. Did he come to rescue the guys from S.W.A.T?

The first creature is a Wyvern trained by the gang members. When the Wyvern heard the S.W.A.T. intervention it immediately showed up as trained, but come one, a 10m long dragon coming in a living room, obviously, it turns into a mess!

People are free to make their own interpretation of who this Wyvern could be if it was transposed to the Pokemon universe.

Well, if he did, he failed 🙂 It looks like someone or something pulled him out. What was it?

The creature who pulled the wyvern out of the building was a 4 arms gorilla, trained by the S.W.A.T. (like a K9 dog IRL) for their intervention. If the gangs have dragons and monsters the S.W.A.T. obviously has its own assets too!

The next scene is something that most of us would want to know more about. We can clearly see that the S.W.A.T, well some of the team, are on the ground most probably eaten by the scary creature with big ears, not sure what it is, but you could tell us.

The design of the Abomination is based on a mix of a bear and a bat. Once again, people are free to make their own interpretations of this creature!

Was he also trying to defend the guys being arrested by the S.W.A.T?

The abomination is also a creature owned by the gang member, who was already in the bedroom before the intervention started. The first guy who turns left right after the main door breaks, finds it first. When the wyvern crashes into the living room you can hear the other S.W.A.T. members firing on something, it was the Abomination attacking them.

Also, it would be great if you could tell us how long did it take you to make the video?

It took us about 6 months to make this video in our free time and half of it during the lockdown. It was a small team, and actually, if you wanna know a secret, we finished the video 2 hours before its release!

We are noOne, a French 3D studio, and our project is to create Muted, a 3D animated and realistic series in a parallel world to ours where fantastical creatures replace animals. The series will be inspired by a darker version of the Pokemon world and the Black Mirror series. Each episode will tackle one specific topic related to the animal condition.

The first season will include from 5 to 7 episodes, from 6 to 8 minutes long,
We are aiming to raise 120 000€ ($140,000) in order to create the first episode which, shall the campaign succeed, will be released on May 1st, 2021.”

Let’s help them out to raise enough money so we could all enjoy watching it. Visit here to find out more.
