Field Research Tasks are defined as missions which are to be completed by a Trainer and after they are completed, there are rewards such as Stardust, berries and most importantly, encounters with Pokemon.
A Trainer can get these types of tasks by spinning Pokestops. When a task is completed, not only a Trainer gets a reward, but they also get a stamp for the Research Breakthrough. When the player has seven stamps, one per day, they can get an encounter with a special Pokemon, Stardust, candies or berries, and XP.
As a December Special, Niantic said that it will either be Lapras or Unovan Darumaka, paired up with bonus XP. These Pokemon will start being the “special encounter” on Tuesday, December 1st, 2020 and will leave us on Friday, January 1st, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. PST (GMT-8).

- Catch 10 Pokémon: Magikarp (can be shiny)
- Catch 3 Fire-type Pokemon: Torchic (can be shiny)
- Catch 5 different species of Ice-type Pokemon: 2 Rare Candy
- Catch 5 Pokémon with Weather Boost: Poliwag (can be shiny), Vulpix (can be shiny)
- Catch 5 Pokemon with Weather Boost: Snover (can be shiny)
- Catch a Dragon-type Pokémon: Dratini (can be shiny)
- Defeat 2 Team Go Rocket Grunts: Vulpix (can be shiny)
- Earn 5 hearts with your buddy: Growlithe (can be shiny)
- Evolve a Pokemon: Flareon
- Evolve a Pokemon: Eevee (can be shiny)
- Give your buddy 3 treats: Spheal
- Hatch an Egg: Sneasel (can be shiny)
- Make 3 Excellent Throws in a row: Larvitar (can be shiny), Gible (can be shiny)
- Make 3 Great Throws in a row: Onix (can be shiny)
- Make 3 Great Throws: Lileep (can be shiny), Anorith (can be shiny), Gastly (can be shiny)
- Make 5 Great Curveball Throws in a row: Spinda #4 (can be shiny)
- Make 5 Nice Throws: Voltorb (can be shiny)
- Power Up Pokémon 5 times: Bulbasaur (can be shiny), Charmander (can be shiny), Squirtle (can be shiny)
- Send 3 Gifts to friends: Houndour (can be shiny)
- Use 5 berries to help catch Pokemon: Ponyta (can be shiny)
- Win 2 Raids: Alolan Sandshrew (can be shiny)
- Win 5 raids: Aerodactyl (can be shiny)
- Win a Level 3 or higher raid: Kabuto (can be shiny), Omanyte (can be shiny)
