Valve has officially announced that Counter-Strike 2, the sequel to their widely popular game, launching in Summer 2023. The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer showcasing some exciting changes and improvements players can expect. The trailer is embedded at the top of this article, but let’s see what comes with CS2 below.

Changes coming with the Source 2 engine

With over 20 years of history, maps have played a crucial role in the Counter-Strike experience. Valve understands the importance of these maps, and in Counter-Strike 2, they are taking a three-tiered approach to ensure both a fresh and familiar experience.

The first approach, called touchstone maps, consists of classic maps with solid foundations that have remained largely unchanged. These maps serve as a yardstick for players to gauge the gameplay differences between CS:GO and Counter-Strike 2. With improvements to lighting and character read, the touchstone maps will retain their rich legacy.

The second approach focuses on upgrades. These maps will feature new Source 2 lighting and a physically based rendering system that creates realistic materials, lighting, and reflections. This enhanced visual fidelity will elevate the gaming experience and immerse players in more believable environments.

Valve is overhauling the oldest maps from the ground up, using the full power of Source 2 tools and rendering features. These completely revamped maps will breathe new life into the series while preserving the essence players have come to love. Furthermore, Valve will make these tools available for community map makers, allowing them to build, experiment, and iterate with ease.

Counter-Strike 2 promises to deliver a stunning visual upgrade, with improved lighting, player read, and materials that will make even the most familiar maps feel brand new. As the gaming world eagerly awaits the Summer 2023 release, fans can prepare for a thrilling and refreshed experience in the next installment of this beloved franchise. Now, back to CS:GO to sharpen our shooting skills before this gem is released!

I am ANGE1K. I started playing video games a long time ago. In a blink of an eye, I became a hardcore gamer. A couple of years later, I traversed to the professional Counter-Strike 1.6 scene. After the competitive ERA, I managed to find the gaming industry amusing and started working on FGR. My mission is to lurk and discover secrets, create guides and provide you with some important news. Oh, yeah, patch notes too. I mostly play FPS and love experimenting in good MMORPGs.
