Guerrilla Games Confirms Horizon 3 in Development as Studio Director Moves to PlayStation Studios

Guerrilla Games has confirmed that a sequel to Horizon Forbidden West, tentatively titled Horizon 3, is developing alongside an “exciting online project.” This announcement comes as Studio Director and Executive Producer Angie Smets is leaving the company to join PlayStation Studios as Head of Development Strategy.

Angie Smets has spent the past two decades at Guerrilla Games overseeing the development of the Killzone franchise and the Horizon series. In a farewell statement, Smets expressed her gratitude for her time at Guerrilla and the accomplishments she and her team achieved together.

Guerrilla Games has announced new leadership to take the studio forward: Joel Eschler as Studio Director and Production Director, Hella Schmidt as Studio Director and General Manager, and Jan-Bart van Beek as Studio Director and Art Director. Technical Director Michiel van der Leeuw will focus on the future technology and strategy for the Decima engine.

In addition to the development of Horizon 3, the studio has been working on a previously announced multiplayer project set in the Horizon universe. Roughly 10 minutes of early development gameplay footage from the multiplayer title were leaked earlier this year, and job listings have suggested that the game could release for mobile devices as well.

The Horizon franchise has experienced a busy few months, with the launch of Horizon Call of the Mountain for PS VR2 and the release of Burning Shores, Forbidden West’s expansion. There are also rumors of an enhanced PS5 remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn, although this project is reportedly not being developed in-house by Guerrilla.
