Is Xbox Hinting at a Surprise Psychonauts 3 Release?

Recently, an image shared by Xbox on social media has stirred up rumors in the gaming community about a potential Psychonauts 3 in development. The image shared on an Xbox account, featured a game of “noughts and crosses,” also known as tic-tac-toe, with the letters spelling out “PSYCHO” and three Xs, leading fans to theorize about the possibility of a third game in the popular franchise.

Released by Double Fine Productions, Psychonauts 2 was widely acclaimed and won several awards. The sequel was long-awaited, coming more than a decade after the original Psychonauts. Both games are recognized for their unique blend of platforming, exploration, and storytelling with a distinctly humorous flair.

However, as exciting as this speculation might be for fans, taking these rumors with a grain of salt is essential. As several commentators noted, it could be a fun post from the social media team rather than a real hint at a new game. Further, given that Psychonauts 2 was only released in 2021, some have questioned whether Double Fine would be prepared to announce a new entry in the series so soon.

Also, Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine, has expressed interest in pursuing new ideas after completing Psychonauts 2, which might point to a different direction for the studio in the immediate future.

Since Microsoft acquired Double Fine, the studio has enjoyed more financial stability, which enabled the completion of Psychonauts 2. Fans remain optimistic that this support could pave the way for more entries in beloved Double Fine franchises and entirely new projects.
