Path of Exile: The Fall of Oriath Minimap Preview

There are some improvements in Path of Exile’s minimap in order to make it easier to navigate through the complicated areas. In this post, the devs included a preview of the map and an insight into the new way it was made.

While working on the minimap the devs had three main goals:

  • Display all obstacles on the minimap in a clear way.
  • Improve the process of exploring the map and make it easier to complete the clear areas.
  • Updating the map to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

The areas like The Docks were always hard to navigate because many of the barriers were not shown on the minimap due to the technical limitations. Because of this, the devs added a walkability layer to the minimap that indicates which areas can and can not be crossed. See the images below for details.

The layer can be turned off if the player would like to. But this did prove to be useful for navigating some areas.

The developers also added an exploration line that will show walkable areas that are yet to be explored. While exploring, the character will “push” this line until it will fully disappear, indicating that the area has been completely explored.

This attribute creates a significantly improved experience while completing a full map-clears or finding specific locations, for example, quest points.

There is an issue with the current minimap. That is the depiction of terrain and barriers is not that clear. In order to improve this issue, the devs took an advantage of the fact that the minimap is a 2D set of tiles during the process of building the game. This shows that they can improve their quality without affecting the performance in any possible way.

This enables for the devs to apply high-quality ambient occlusion shading with supersampled antialiasing to make the tile geometry more readable.

The upcoming weekend, the devs are going to hold a Super Stash Sale where they will discount every type of stash tab. Everything will be discounted, from Premium Stash Tab Bundles and even Guild Stash Tabs. Follow this link for a full selection of discounted stash tabs.
