Pokemon Go Mega Evolution Coming this Week, Here’s How it Works and Future Mega Evolution Events

Trainers, we’ve got details about the Mega Evolution in Pokemon Go, how Mega Evolution works, the future Mega Evolution events, and decided to share it with you.

First thing first, Niantic and Pokemon Go started teasing the Mega Evolution on August 25, 2020, and we’re now 100% sure that the Mega Evolution is coming to the game this week (we can’t share the exact date, maybe tomorrow), and here is everything you should know about it.

Mega Evolution in Pokemon Go

The newest update on Pokémon GO will be introducing their very first Mega Pokémon this week, and with that, they will be introducing a whole chunk of new gameplay mechanics centered around these Mega Pokémon.

From the definition off of Bulbapedia “Mega Evolution is a temporary transformation introduced in Generation VI that affects certain Pokémon.” In Pokémon GO a resource is required to evolve in to and keep the Mega forms of the Pokémon, that resource is Mega Energy and your pokemon will be keeping the Mega form as long as you have enough Mega Energy.

Like Pokémon candy, Mega Energy is different for every Pokémon. And as stated above the Mega Energy is depleted while the Pokémon is evolved. Note that only one of you Pokémon at any given time can be Mega Evolved.

Another thing that is set to launch alongside Mega Evolutions is Mega Raids which is a new tier of raids in which you can get specific Mega Energy from battling specific Pokémon.

The Pokémon that will be available during this week will be none other than Mega Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise, and they will be available during Mega Raids. Alongside these Pokémon, Mega Beedrill will also be making its debut this week with Mega Energy available from a new questline A Mega Discovery.

With Mega Pokémon being all-around powerful they will also be boosting the attack power of other Pokémon during raid battles, while Pokémon that share the same type as the Mega Evolved Pokémon will be getting an even better attack power boost.

Similar to Legendary Pokémon Mega Pokémon can’t be set to defend a gym. They also can be set as your buddy. Mega Pokémon are not usable (currently) in the competitive Go Battle League, but can be used in battles against your friends. A new Mega Pokémon section of the game’s Pokédex will also go live, letting you track each species. And Shadow and Clone Pokémon cannot be Mega Evolved.

September will be filled with Mega Evolution-themed events, further details of which will be announced closer to the time. Mega Raids will be involved from September 1st to 7th, later you will be tasked to compete in gym, trainer, and Team Rocket battles from September 11th to 17th, and lastly September 22nd to 28th will feature buddy tasks.

For last, the Pokemon Go team will be making changes to the Raid System and you can find more about it here. Reportedly, we won’t see Level 2 and 4 Raids anymore.
