Sega Revives Classics with Panzer Dragoon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Sakura Wars Among Rumored Reboots

At The Game Awards, Sega announced reboots for five of its iconic franchises, including Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and Golden Axe, hinting at more similar projects in the pipeline.

According to a report by Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming, Sega approved up to 10 reboot projects between 2020 and 2021 as part of its ambitious Super Game initiative. From these, Henderson reveals that three are likely to be Panzer Dragoon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Sakura Wars, all in early development stages.

Panzer Dragoon has been quiet since its last major release, Panzer Dragoon Orta, in 2002, aside from the 2020 remake by MegaPixel Studio. Meanwhile, Sakura Wars had a soft reboot in 2019. Intriguingly, Sega seems to have obtained the license to develop a AAA game based on Neon Genesis Evangelion, a series not originally from its franchise portfolio.

Henderson is uncertain about the identities of the remaining two projects from the ten. However, speculation arises from eight recently filed Sega trademarks, including Alex Kidd, After Burner, House of the Dead, Outrun, Super Monkey Ball, Altered Beast Eternal, Champions Kid, and Chameleon.

Sega also shared further details about the announced reboots. Jet Set Radio is set to take an open-world format, and fresh insights were provided for Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and the newly titled Streets of Rage game, Streets of Rage Revolution.
