UPDATE Pokemon Go to Add ‘Team Medallion’ Item Allowing Players to Change Their Team

UPDATE February 21: Trainers, the new Team Medallion item that will allow you to change team, will be available for purchase from the in-game shop starting February 26. The price is 1,000 PokeCoins.

Any of your Pokemon that are in Gyms when you change teams will be returned with no PokeCoins earned once it’s defeated. You also can’t battle your own Pokemon, so if you return to a Gym one of your Pokemon is defending, your Pokemon will be returned to you with no PokeCoins earned.

UPDATE February 17, 2019: A new item (IAP – in app purchase) that will allow players to change their team in Pokemon Go has been added to Game Master file a.k.a Team Medallion, with the following description:

You will not be able to purchase another Team Medallion for another 365 days. Your Pokémon currently defending Gyms won’t earn PokéCoins when they’re defeated.

This means that Niantic is definitely working on this feature, and we hope to see it soon. Take a look at the new team change or Team Medallion item icon below.

Previous Story September 24, 2018: Niantic and Pokemon Go are planning to add a new ‘Switch a Team’ feature, allowing players to change their team. They are working on other features at the moment, and as they said, this feature will be added in the near future.

As we all know, there are three teams in Pokemon Go, Team Instinct, Team Mystic and Team Valor. Each team has its own team leader, mascot and color:

Team Valor (red) – Candela (leader) and Moltres (mascot)

  • Pokemon are stronger than humans, and they’re warm-hearted too! I’m researching ways to enhance Pokemon‘s natural power in the pursuit of true strength. There’s no doubt that the Pokemon our team has trained are the strongest in battle! Are you ready?

Team Mystic (blue) – Blanche (leader) and Articuno (mascot)

  • The wisdom of Pokemon is immeasurably deep. I am researching why they evolve. My team? With our calm analysis of every situation, we can’t lose!

Team Instinct (yellow) – Spark (leader) and Zapdos (mascot)

  • Pokemon are creatures with excellent intuition. I bet the secret to their intuition is related to how they’re hatched. Come on and join my team! You never lose when you trust your instincts!

Players can’t ‘Change a team’ at the moment, but that will change as Niantic confirmed that they’re working on adding this feature to Pokemon Go in the future.

How do I change my team?

“We plan to add this functionality to Pokemon Go in the future. We are working on a few other big features first, so we don’t have an estimate on when changing teams will be possible.”
