Trainers, Old Friends, New Beginnings is a Timed Research introduced in Pokemon Go last year. It looks like someone at Niantic pressed the wrong button and made it available once again.
Old Friends, New Beginnings is a two-step Timed Research, and completing it will grant you encounters with Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, and Pikachu. The rewards also include Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu Candy, and Mega Energy.
Reports say that the Old Friends, New Beginnings Timed Research is not available for everyone, and only players from France, Germany, Spain, London, Netherlands, Gibraltar, and Switzerland.

- Earn 12 hearts with your buddy: Bulbasaur
- Earn 3000 XP: Charmander
- Power up Pokémon 10 times: Squirtle
- Rewards: 20× Bulbasaur Candy, 20× Charmander Candy, 20× Squirtle Candy

- Claim Reward: 100× Venusaur Mega Energy
- Claim Reward: 100× Charizard Mega Energy
- Claim Reward: 100× Blastoise Mega Energy
- Rewards: Pikachu, and 20×Pikachu Candy
